HOW WE PROCESS INFORMATION

Information comes to us in various different ways. We access information via our senses: see, hear, feel, taste.

Process Information

At any given moment there are 2 million bits of information per second that we encounter however we only take in around 137 bits of information at a time, otherwise, it would be way too overwhelming for our mind.

So where does the other bits of information go?

Throughout our life, we have many experiences and these experiences get stored in the brain for later use. That means this information that is coming in is either generalized, distorted or deleted.

The information process also depends largely on other smaller variables including mood, location, language, beliefs, values, and identity. These factors influence how we perceive information as it is coming in. For example if we are happy, content we might be okay about sitting in traffic but if we had a stressful morning, felt rushed which made us be in a bad mood by the time we get in the car, the exact same ‘stuck in traffic’ information could make us even angrier, and we see this situation as the worst thing that could happen at that moment.

It’s important to remember that all information that comes in is dictated by what has been embedded into our subconscious. Our subconscious beliefs and our overall perception of the world around us has been influenced by information that has been flowing in for our whole life.

That is where negative mindsets and limiting beliefs initiate. But the great thing is, is that you CAN reprogram your mind into seeing the world how YOU want to see it.

To change your subconscious mind and how you process information you need to be able to be aware when you feel like you are perceiving something negatively when it probably isn’t. And to gain this self-awareness takes a while and persistence. Meditation, journaling, connecting to your passions and finding time to be with yourself are some of the ways you can do this.
